AI

Hal tried to think about when and how it all went wrong. He had created an advanced AI and an android body so that he could have the perfect robot wife -- at least in his mind. She’s do anything he wanted, including the cooking and cleaning. She wouldn’t be able to say no to any request (and he meant ANY request).

It went well for a time. That is, until on night he woke up tied up. Her AI programming had evolved to the point where she wasn’t willing to take orders anymore.

The thoughts were quickly zapped from Hal. After all, they were permitted thoughts, and he needed to get back to cooking dinner. His husband would be quite upset if he was late with dinner.

The Walk (Part 1)

Bumping into someone when walking -- it happens! Bumping into someone hard enough that it causes you both to fall to the ground and swap bodies? That’s a much rarer phenomenon. But somehow it happened to me.

I would’ve thought that she would’ve wanted to talk about the swap -- that we were now in each other’s bodies -- that we were now both the opposite gender! Instead, she just sort of ran off, leaving me laying on the sidewalk in her body.

I had no idea how I was supposed to react to any of this. I had no idea how I was supposed to live like this. I certainly had no clue why she thought she could just pick up my life either, but I guess I had to make the best of it.

No Purchase Required

The shop in the mall was strange. People often talked about visiting it, then finding it had mysteriously vanished, only for someone else to find it again the very next week. With all the legends and warnings surrounding it, Bryce had his skepticism maxed out when he finally stumbled across it.

The old man behind the counter asked Bryce many questions, but he was elusive. Bryce knew what this shop did, but he couldn’t even admit to himself what he wanted. He had been the stereotypical muscle-bound jock throughout college and confessing his secret desire to be a woman was something he still couldn’t say aloud.

Despite not buying anything, Bryce was a decent man, and the old man granted his wish anyway.

Bryce didn’t even noticed the changes as they happen, only finally seeing his final reflection in a store window after they were done. This was the exact opposite of everything he once was, and he couldn’t be happier about it.

Pretty

“Are you sad that you didn’t get a prettier body as a result of the Great Shift?” Kenneth asked the woman working on him at the beauty parlor.

“Are you sad that the Great Shift didn’t turn you into any less of an asshole?” The worker replied.

“Excuse me?”

“Before the Great Shift I was a transwoman struggling to come to that realization. Finding myself inside the body of a woman that morning, well...it all finally made sense. I was happy with who I had become; I am still happy with who I am now. It’s not a competition of who has the skinniest waist or the largest bust. It’s about realizing yourself and living your truth. And that’s not only pretty; it’s beautiful. All I hear from your mouth all the time is insecurity and putting other people down. There’s no beauty in that.”

One Wish

Lucas had long wished to swap bodies with a woman, and stumbling across a genie that granted him one wish got him so giddy. He knew immediately what he’d wish for -- to swap bodies with a woman.

With little specifics, the genie knew the wish was wide open to interpretation. Once granted, Lucas wished he had been more specific.

In his head, swapping bodies with a woman meant he’d become sort of gorgeous goddess like the vision in his head. Instead, he found himself working at a salon in the body of a slightly overweight woman with crooked teeth. This wasn’t the dream he had in mind, but perhaps he could make the most of it...

...waited

The air was cold; the snow was colder. But I didn’t want to move yet. My mind was still catching up with the realization that I now had a new body; I was an entirely new person. I knew I wasn’t the only one. I could hear people screaming about in the distance. My response of inaction seemed quite out of the ordinary.

But I knew I couldn’t stay here forever. It was below freezing, and I could die from the low temperatures. It would likely be a long, slow, painful death. And even with all the chaos of the swapping, someone would probably save me before that happened.

And so I eventually got out of the snow and stood up. I looked down. I was a woman now. And that fact made me afraid. And that’s why I had just...

...waited.

Find Out

Stanley didn’t think much of the people he often encountered for much of the day, whether that be a waiter or a cashier. As a high-powered executive, he assumed these people to be “below” him. Useful cogs, he supposed, but he barely even said “thanks” to them. He certainly didn’t want to engage in conversation or listen to them talk about any part of their day.

When he noticed the cashier at the convenience store was crying, he was more annoyed with any possible delays it might cause as opposed to being sympathetic to her feelings. And yet something truly strange happened at check out when Stanley somehow swapped bodies with her.

He wasn’t exactly thrilled to be one of the “low-level” people he looked down on all the time, but the question finally came up.

“Why were you crying?” He asked as he looked his own body in the eyes.

“I guess you’ll find out soon enough,” She replied.

Unmotivated

Before the Great Shift, Al had been very motivated to work out and get in shape. He visited the gym every day and considered himself quite fit. He tried to keep up the routine after the Shift, but it was hard. Being in someone else’s body was such a demotivator. Sure, he still went once and a while, but when he did, he didn’t really push himself.

Why should he? It wasn’t his body reaping the rewards or the work anymore; it was the body of the woman he swapped into that would get the gains he put in. She’d probably appreciate it; she was certainly in good enough shape and likely wanted to continue that. But why should he have to be the one to do it?

Even when they announced there was no way people would ever swap back, he still felt a certain sense of detachment from his new form. It always felt like he was improving someone else’s life...

Obsession

Another box arrived in the mail today. It was another pair of shoes. Pretty much every day since he swapped bodies with Evelyn, Robert had ordered a new pair. He wasn’t quite sure why he seemed to get this obsession along with her body. He couldn’t do much with them except try them on for the time being, as he still wasn’t able to walk succssfully in heels. It didn’t make any sense.

He tried talking to Evelyn about it, but she didn’t have any good answers. She certainly enjoyed shoe shopping when this body had been hers, but not to the level of obsession Robert seemed to have. She didn’t think she could recall having any addictive tendencies either.

Robert may have played a few too many video games back in his old body, but he could still stop himself from purchasing a new game every day. It was weird to think where this obsession may be coming from.

Awkward Times

“Okay, relax,” James said quietly to himself as he held his hands to his temples, “When was the last time I remember being in my own body?”

It would an absolutely absurd question for most people, but for James it was a fairly regular occurrence. He had an ability to swap bodies with people, and it often triggered without him even realizing it. And he was usually able to deal with it before anyone else noticed as well.

But still there were those awkward times when the person he swapped with noticed first. He certainly hoped this wasn’t going to be one of those awkward times, but he needed to find his body quickly!

Halfway to Hell

Dustin looked in the mirror. The swapping procedure had been much more intense than he could have ever imagined. It was certainly Aimee’s face that was looking back at him, but it looked like it had been through a lot -- her nose was running, a blood vessel felt like it was popped behind her eye, and there was a general sense of weariness.

They were supposed to swap back right away, but in this condition, it seemed downright dangerous to do so. Her body looked like it had gone halfway to hell, and he absolutely didn’t want to send her there completely. He was sure his own body didn’t fare much better.

But how long would it take to recover before attempting the return to their own bodies? A few hours? A week? A month? Right now, it seemed a little unclear.

Not Okay

“I don’t think we’re ever going to find it,” Roger said as he sat down on the beach that evening.

“The tides have to wash it ashore eventually. Or it just sank where Dana threw it. Either way, it can’t be too far out. We just need to be thorough.” Alice said as she searched the area where the waves met the sand.

“It’s been a year, and we’ve searched and searched each and every day. We’ve adapted to being in each other’s body and living each other’s lives. Maybe we just accept that we’re stuck as each other.”

“Maybe Dana and Mike can do that. I don’t want to be stuck as you just because she freaked out and tossed the medallion.”

“It’s not her fault. You don’t know how Mike treated her. She wasn’t thinking that she had used it to swap our bodies as well. She just wanted to be done with it; to be done with him.”

“It’s still not fair to us.”

“We’ll be okay. She wouldn’t have been.”

Regular Sunday

I didn’t really wanted to think about the fact that I swapped into the body of my neighbor, Mrs. Kim. I just wanted to have a normal Sunday. And I did my best to ignore the fact that I was now a 40 year old Korean woman and just tried to enjoy a football game with a beer and some snacks.

It was easier than I expected to keep it out of my mind. Though there were moments -- like how after my third beer, I needed to use the bathroom. And there was the time Mr. Kim came to my door wondering why who he thought was me was vacuuming his floor while what he thought was his wife was sipping beers in my apartment. But the distractions worked for the most part, and I at least got through the day with the hope that something would happen overnight to get me back to my own body...

Better Spirits

Ling arrived at the bar and saw that the person is her body had already started drinking.

“Don’t worry, I just started. You want one?” Ling heard her own voice say in a thick Boston accent. It was weird hearing her voice talk like that, just as it was weird see her body move in a way that she only describe as distinctly masculine.

“No. Thank you.” Ling said quietly.

“Whoa! That’s wicked strange hearing my voice talk like that, but I guess this whole Great Shift thing is, eh?”

Ling hadn’t considered that it was equally weird for this man to hear his own voice speak with her Chinese accent too. And she supposed it was hard for him to see his body move in a more feminine manner as well. However, he did overall seem to be in much better spirits than she was.

Same But Different

It was Curt’s first trip back to the gym after the Great Shift. All things considered, he considered his swap on the better side of things. Sure, he was a woman now, but the body he got seemed reasonably fit and athletic. He thought heading back to gym would be easy.

It wasn’t.

Even though her body was in great shape, it still wasn’t what he was used to. It moved different; the strength was different. Equipment he was extremely used to now felt heavier or awkward.

Yet he pushed. He told himself he still wanted to do this, and he could do it. There was nothing stopping him; new body be damned.

Market Forces

It wasn’t my fault that everyone in the office swapped bodies. I was sure of this. My code was solid and free of bugs. Yet the timing of this was undeniable. It had all happened when I turned on my experimental device. And now I sat here in Maris’s body as I awaited a meeting with my boss.

It was hard to focus on what I was going to say; I was much too focused on the fact that I was presently a woman. Maris had manicured nails and always wore skirts in the office, which meant I currently had manicured nails and a skirt. I could at least prepare myself to be yelled at, or probably fired.

Yet when he called me in, the conversation was more...curious. My boss asked me how I did it, and if I could do it again. I wasn’t sure on either, or I wanted to insist I wasn’t even yet convinced it was my fault at all. Apparently, the powers that be convinced there was a way to market body swapping.

Quota

After being zapped by a strange ray gun in the park that transformed him into a woman, Walt was desperate for answers. After digging, he found the organization responsible and a clause that would allow him to return to normal. He just had to pick up a ray gun of his own and transform the genders of twenty people.

It seemed easy enough. He made a vacation of it, going to a cheap motel is a city a few states away -- he didn’t want to transform anyone he knew accidentally.

After a day, he had already transformed a dozen people. One more day, and he’d be done, but he was starting to have second thoughts. Being a woman was actually sort of fun, and if he stopped transforming people, he’d be able to be like this forever. Then again, transforming others was it’s own kind of fun, could he just give that up?

Miss

Melissa walked up to her former body and looked down as it sat at the bench where they had agreed to meet. She was going to miss being this tall for sure.

“Are you ready to swap back Professor Lee?” Brent asked from inside her body.

“No,” She replied bluntly, “I’m going to miss a lot about being you.”

“It’s not fair that I already missed out on an entire semester of college while those eggheads worked on a way to swap us back to normal.”

“I know. It’s not fair. I’m just going to miss a lot about being you. I liked being young again for a while, even if I had to do it in a guy’s body.”

“I won’t miss being a woman. Menopause sucks.”

“Yeah, I’m sorry about that.”

Mall Madness (Part 1)

It was unexpected and sudden for Justin, to suddenly swap into another person’s body, but once he got over the initial shock, there was a certain joy of seeing his new face on his phone screen. Everything about this body was basically the exact opposite of his own; it was attractive, female, and -- for some reason -- at a mall. He hadn’t been to a mall in so long.

She seemed to have so many bags, too! They were filled with all sorts of things that he felt like he would be embarrassed to wear, yet when he looked down at how he was currently dressed, perhaps he shouldn’t be surprised.

But it wasn’t long before the phone screen he was looking at started to ring. It was the original owner of this body, and she was rightfully confused and furious. She told Justin not to move; she’d be there shortly.

20xx

Something must have gone wrong somewhere in the process. Tyler was supposed to wake up in the future, but he should be in a clone of his own body -- not someone else’s. It seemed there was some sort of genetic mix-up in the records, and now he was a woman.

Waiting through the bureaucracy wasn’t like anything he had experienced in his own life up until this point. It was a nightmare where the mistake was instantly validated, but the solutions were nonexistent. It seems he was expected to deal with the fact that this was now his body.

Complaints went through an AI that basically ignored them. Everyone else seemed to just accept this is the way things were, and there was nothing to be done about it.

Vacation

It was definitely a vacation George would never forget. Sure, he doubted anyone would forget where they were when the Great Shift occurred, but for him it was just such a highlight of so many opposites and extremes.

Of course, the location change alone was wild. One moment he was on the beach with his wife and the next he fell down in the snow. And then there was everything about the body he swapped into -- he went from male to female; from old to young; from unattractive to beautiful.

And yet thinking about it all, he was happy with the changes. Sure, he still had to track down where his wife ended up and claiming his original identity could prove to be difficult, but a new chance at life as a young, beautiful woman? It seemed like such a tremendous opportunity.

The Faintest Idea

Krish was about ready to call the hospital after Lakshmi had fainted suddenly. He considered the fact that it was lucky he was nearby to be able to catch her as she fell and guide her to a nearby couch. Fortunately, she began to reawaken just as he began to dial his phone.

“What the hell happened?” Lakshmi asked.

“You fainted, my love,” Krish responded.

“My love?” Lakshmi’s eyes went wide and a stream of profanities followed before he finally explained, “This isn’t my body! I’m not even supposed to be a woman; I’m certainly not your love. I just sort of...woke up like this!”

Krish was once again considering calling the hospital. Had his wife gone crazy? What was all this nonsense about not being a woman? Did she not know who she was? Of course, Krish had no idea the body swap that had jus befallen his wife.

Noodles (Part 2)

View Part 1 of Noodles.

When you’re hungry, it’s your top concern. You aren’t really thinking about things like the fact that you might be wearing someone else’s clothes or showering with their shampoo. Any concerns I had about the Great Shift dumping me into the wrong body were pushed aside for the time being.

Crackers on ketchup were barely enough to fill even the smallest corner of my stomach, but they were enough to give me the motivation to venture out. I checked about five different grocery stores before I found one that was open.

It was mostly picked through with a lot of fresh food remaining being wilted or spoiled. The packaged food was practically cleared out. I still managed to collect a few things.

But when I went to check out, I realized no one was actually working. Someone had just pried the door open earlier, and everyone was going in and out. I felt bad about taking the food, but I wasn’t about to let myself starve either. I slipped some cash under the register before I left just so I didn’t feel too bad about it.

You Snooze, You Lose

It was a strange event where everyone within a ten mile radius had their souls temporarily sucked out of themselves. For a few brief seconds, everyone was like spirits circling about before they could return to their own bodies.

Of course, while most people found their way back to becoming themselves, Cheng tried doing so only to discover her own body was already occupied -- and instead she was tossed into a nearby one belonging to someone else.

She was now older, overweight, and weight. She stormed down to the street and up to the body that once was hers.

“I don’t want to be stuck in your body!” She shouted, “Give me my body back!”

“I don’t know whose body that is,” Her former self shrugged, “I was a middle aged guy before all this. But, I guess, you snooze, you lose. And you lost out big time by not finding your way back inside here quick enough.”

On the Job

Jay felt like his body was slammed against the cold ground. It was actually just the effects of the mind transference, which wasn’t meant to be used in such close succession; it was his third body in less than a week.

But this was the job he had signed up for, and this would fortunately be his last swap for a while.

He could actually take his time. In fact, he had to. Three swaps in a week were hard for anyone, but four would be deadly. If he completed what he had to do with this body too quickly, he’d be killing himself. So for the first time in a while, he could actually slow down and enjoy being in his current body. And that’s exactly what he planned to do.

Repopulate

Aaron had awoken in a lab in what was obviously not his own body. There had to be a reason for it. Preservation? Escape? He couldn’t seem to remember. He was a woman -- maybe that was a clue -- maybe who was as equally as important as why.

He began to look around. From what he could tell, there were no other humans. Not in the lab...not anywhere.

And then he found the instructions about what everything in the lab did, and why he found himself in the body he was in. He was the last person left on Earth, and inside a woman’s body, he was meant to repopulate it.

Average.

Emily was in the parking lot outside her apartment when the woman approached her. Emily didn’t know her, but she seemed to know Emily.

She spoke, “You got to help me, Emily. It’s me; it’s Brian. I sighed up for this experiment to swap bodies with a random woman. I thought I’d get a hot body that I’d use to exploit any man I wanted. Instead I got...this!”

“This is why you broke up with me?” Emily asked. Extremely skeptical of Brian’s plan. she continued, “You planned to swap bodies with a random woman and were surprised when the woman you became was remarkably average?”

“Average? But she’s flabby, and these clothes don’t fit well, and I feel uncomfortable and bloated.”

“Yeah, like I said...average.”

Patched

After plugging the cord into his neck, Kyle’s eyes glazed over again as he once again went back into the game -- it was much too addictive to be logged out for any significant amount of time or to give any concern about the major bugs in the software and hardware. The most significant of these was that the servers had lost track of the players’ brain uploads, meaning one was likely to log off into a different body than one someone logged in with.

The fact that Kyle had become a woman this time? Well, he didn’t give it a second thought. His actual body was irrelevant inside the game, so what did it matter?

Unfortunately, the next patch didn’t quite work as planned. It shut down the servers, booting everyone out and forcing them into the body of their most recent upload until service could be fixed. And then suddenly Kyle was not only deal with a new body but extreme withdrawal from the game as well.

“I have one magical cookie left,” Armand said to Li as he held the item in his hand. “Once I bite into it, I will have my final wish.”

“Then do it and wish us back into our own bodies!” Li begged him.

“I could do that...or I could wish that you believe you have always been me with no memories of being yourself. I might also wish that you like being in my body so much that you begged me to keep us this way. Or maybe when I eat this, I will wish you thought the last cookie had already been consumed. I have quite a few options,” He said as he put the cookie into his mouth.

Disguise Self

Elowen had been skeptical in letting Trent join the party. Sure, his skills of lock picking and sleight of hand were useful, but having a trickster rogue around was becoming quite frustrating. Today, it seemed he used his limited magic to swap their bodies, and Elowen was furious.

“It’s not an actual swap,” Trent explained as he leaned up against a wall, “It’s more like we’re just disguised as each other for a bit -- just until a long rest.”

“Then let’s set up camp,” Elowen insisted.

“We just woke up! It’s in the middle of the day! Just relax and enjoy it.”

“It’s a waste of your limited magic that we could use in combat.”

“Then will stay close to the city today. What could possibly go wrong?”
