As I watched the blue glow fade into the distance, I knew it wasn’t coming back. I don’t know how I knew that; it was sort of similar to how I was the only one who noticed the changes it caused -- and now those changes were done. Whatever purpose it had in mixing my roommate up in the way it had, it was done with us now.
And Zuri and I were definitely mixed up. It had simply swapped our bodies at first -- and that was weird enough -- but then it started giving things back to me. My eyesight changed first when I got my original blue eyes back with their perfect 20/20 vision. Then my hair became blonde and more wispy -- it was inexplicably still able to maintain Zuri’s curls and style. Then it gave me back my pale skin while I maintained Zuri’s Black features. I saw the opposite changes on my body that Zuri now possessed -- though as I mentioned, I was the only one who noticed any of this.
I hoped it would continue changing us back, but that’s when it stopped. Obviously, I was stuck as a woman now, but I had no idea how to even begin to describe my new racial identity; maybe that was the exact thing the blue glow was trying to figure out...
