I didn’t know I was part-fairy growing up. My mom never mentioned anything about it, and it wasn’t until I was nearly forty years old when she finally told me everything -- mostly because she had no choice.
The first thing she told me was that there were no male fairies. This seemed to be a problem, as I was definitely male. She sighed, tell me my dad was as well before his fairy genres took over and transformed; it was why he left and was never around.
Which brought us to point two.
Fairies lived in the forest for thousands of years. I’d quit my job and live in nature. As someone with an affinity for the city pavement, this was also a surprise to me.
Yet when the transformation finally happened, I was at peace with it. I became a woman; I became a fairy; I lived in nature. There was a whole fairy community.
It was all exactly as strange as it sounds. And yet it all felt so normal once I was there.
