Awaken (Part 1)

Jason awoke with a terrible headache. He hadn’t quite remembered falling asleep on the couch, but he figured he must’ve dozed off while watching television, even if he couldn’t remember it. He groaned, noting how the sound coming from his throat seemed weird. Then he rolled onto his stomach, also realizing something about his body felt odd. He heard a few footsteps and saw a shadow looming over him. He turned his head slightly and said, “I have a headache. I just want to get back to napping.”

He didn’t even have time to register the odd tone of his voice. Instead, he was shocked to see that the figure standing next to him was...well, him. Or rather, it was his body.

Can't Go Out Like That

“See you later, Liz,” Kent said to his daughter as he headed to the door.

“Dad, wait, you can’t go out wearing that!” Liz protested.

“Why not? It’s exactly the same outfit that you were going to wear yesterday.”

“Exactly, and you made me change.”

“Right, because you’re my daughter. But I’m a grown man. I can wear whatever I want.”

“No, you WERE a grown man,” Liz said angrily, “That is until we swapped bodies. Now you’re in MY body!”

“In which case I’ll use the same argument you tried to yesterday. I am a twenty one year old grown woman, and you can’t tell me what to do. You may have my body, but you aren’t MY family. I am not living under YOUR roof. This is MY roof. Which means I get to make the rules.”

“Your roof? I bet if we went to the bank right now they wouldn’t think it was your roof. I look like the guy who writes the checks for the mortgage.”

“...And I’m still doing the work to pay for that mortgage. Luckily, they let me work from home.”

Both Liz and her dad paused.

“We’re pretty much both screwed if we don’t swap back soon, aren’t we?” Liz finally sighed, breaking the silence.

SwApp

“Can one of you explain to me why this app is so popular?” Jeff said while nervously looking for an undo button.

“It’s a body swapper. I guess it’s sort of cool to be someone else for a while. You’ve got to admit it’s sort of impressive,” Caitlyn replied.

“That’s easy for you to say,” Natalie retorted, “You got my body. You’re still the same gender at least. I’m stuck in Jeff’s body, and he’s stuck in yours.”

“Hey, I’m not comfortable with the idea of Jeff being in my body, but you’ve got to admit that the fact our phones can even do something like this says a lot about technological advances.”

“It’s not like I’m going to do anything weird with your body!” Jeff interjected, “I just think it’s probably best before I have to do something like go pee.”

“That’s exactly what I’m talking about...”

Rural (Part 2)

Daryl knew his mom was worried about him, and he obviously knew he should swap everyone back to normal, return to his own body, and let her know he was okay. However, he wanted to spend just a little more time in Pam’s body. There was just so much he hadn’t done yet! He told himself it would just be a few more minutes, but then minutes turned to hours and he found himself wearing a breezy summer dress. Everything about this just felt so right.

But as much as he was enjoying being a woman -- being Pam -- he knew it wouldn’t last. He did need to get back to normal, so he trudged over to the shed. But his body was gone; the dog’s body was gone. If he couldn’t find both of them, he was going to be stuck like this! That thought didn’t bother him on some level, but he knew his mom would certainly worry and he just couldn’t do that to her!

Rural

Liz had grown quite worried about her son Daryl. She hadn’t seen him for several hours now, and she was getting worried. He hadn’t enjoyed when their family had moved to the farm in the rural town, and she was worried he had run away. She began to search a little bit when she saw her neighbor, Pam, sitting on a tractor in her field.

“Pam, you haven’t seen Daryl around, have you?” Liz asked nervously.

What Liz didn’t know was on the edge of their property was a small shed that contained a body swapping machine. Daryl had been using it pretty much non-stop since he found him. It just so happened that today he had swapped with Pam, leaving Pam stuck in her dog’s body while her dog was in his body.

“I’m sure he’s fine,” Daryl said with smile, knowing perfectly well that it was the truth.

“I’ve just been worried since we moved here. He doesn’t tell me anything anymore. He seems miserable.”

“I bet he was at first, but this town has a way of growing on people. I’m sure he’s just hanging out with some new friends he’s made, or maybe he found some other way to enjoy himself.”

“I hope you’re right, Pam.”

Coma

Adam wasn’t sure how long he had been in the coma. It may have been months; it may have been years. Throughout it all, he could hear everything the doctors said -- their concerns, their efforts, and even their occasional insults. Lately they were talking about unplugging him. Considering his state, Adam wondered if it might not be so bad; he wished for nothing more than to be out of this hospital bed. But right before the plug was to be pulled, he had an amazing out of body experience. Suddenly he was looking at himself, and he realized he was doing so while standing in the body of one of the doctors. He didn’t want to say anything or call attention to himself. He just wanted to quietly take this woman’s body and sneak out, enjoy the outside for the first time forever -- basically just enjoy life. But before he could do that, he’d have to play up his role. So for the time being, he just looked serious and listened.
