Just Visiting

She appeared out of nowhere in my room with a faint yellow glow. I noticed the wings, yet the fact that she was dressed all in black didn’t escape my notice either.

“Are you an angel or a demon?” I thought to ask.

“It’s not simple,” She sighed, “Your notions of heaven and hell; of good and bad; of male and female -- everything falls apart in ways you can’t imagine when you die.”

“Are you saying I’m dying?”

She laughed, “No, you’re fine. I’m just visiting.”

I was relatively young. Not many of my friends had passed. Even my grandparents were all still alive.

“I can see you’re wondering,” She said, “Time also has very little meaning once you pass. If you must know, I am you. Many years from now, I am you.”

“But you’re -- well -- a woman!”

“Didn’t I say things like gender fall apart? It’s hard to think I was ever this daft!”
