Depression was pretty widespread after the Great Shift, and so many people felt deeply detached from the bodies they now inhabited. As a result, personal hygiene dropped significantly. It was something you could just tell on the street from the way people dressed or even sometimes the overall smell.
I did not want to be one of those people.
There were surely things I didn’t know about hygiene when I suddenly found myself in a woman’s body (I’d certainly learn the hard way when I ended up with my first UTI, for instance), but I never let up on the basics. Brushing my teeth twice a day and showering were no brainers for me -- even as I knew some people struggled to do such basic daily tasks. I honestly think keeping up with those sorts of things helped me adapt and accept who I was now while so many others couldn’t seem to come to terms with their new selves.
