Checkmate

Dimitri was ranked as one of the best chess players in the world. While on vacation, a bubbly young woman sitting at a chess table outside asked if she wouldn’t mind playing a match against her. He laughed, thinking she had no idea who he was or his skills in the game. He even offered her anything she wanted if she was victorious.

He didn’t expect her to win; he certainly didn’t expect her to demand his body; and he certainly didn’t expect her to have the means to actually take his body from him. He begged for another game. He told himself that she just must have gotten lucky. She agreed, but she also upped the stakes.

Dimitri knew he’d have to concentrate this time, and he told himself he should be able to win his body back. Or at least he hoped so. This would be his one and only shot of it, because the thing he had wagered was 90% of his intellect. If he lost here, he simply wouldn’t be smart enough for another shot at it.
