The Same

Max tried to think about all of the ways his life had changed since the Great Shift. It was a lot easier for him to think of the ways they hadn’t. He still had to go to work; he still had bills to pay; he still had to spend money to buy food at the grocery store.

He figured a few little things were different now. He did need to remember tampons when he went to the store. He had a lot more clothes without pockets now, too -- though he often opted for a fannypack instead of a purse. And every once and a while, there was a racist comment directed at him -- which wasn’t something he was used to as a formerly white male.

It was surprising when it first happened; it was a slur, but it hurt more than he expected. He was surprised racism still existed after the Shift -- people like him becoming a different race had to be fairly common, right? Even if you had any preconceived judgments about races before, did any of that even make sense anymore? Then again, he never thought it made any sense before either. Some people are just irrational jerks.
