After the Great Shift, Gordon didn’t have to rush to the store opening like some people. He had been able to borrow outfits from his sister and his girlfriend. But he was tired of depending on them for clothing, and he did want to develop his own style -- so he simply waited for the crowds to die down.
He expected to be ravaged. But despite the mess people had left on the floors, there was still plenty on the racks. In part, this looks like because the store raised prices. And he also imagined many of the people showing up were like him -- men in the bodies of women. They knew they needed clothes for their new bodies, but this didn’t mean they were all that comfortable with actually selecting and buying women’s clothes. Toxic masculinity ran deep and even the slightest frill or bow meant an item might be left behind.
