Will found the device after a meteor crashed in his backyard. He reasoned that a meteor of that size should have caused much more damage, which could only mean it was a controlled landing. And so he explored to find the device.
Using the device proved surprisingly intuitive, but it was what the device did that was an absolute shock. It changed him. At first he had control over how his body changed, but as he used it more and more, the device had plans of its own.
It made him female. It made him more...alien. He could sense he was some sort of hybrid, and the device was planting more thoughts in his head. He had a mission: to reproduce. He retained enough humanity to mate with his felling beings on Earth, but he was also alien enough to pass on the DNA from the cosmos. His offspring would be far better than the average; in a few generations they would take over. This was the invasion. Not little green men running around, but a slower, far more subtle one. And it was in preparation for what was to come.
