The postmodern world often felt devoid of magic with things like faeries and dragons often only existing in storybooks and video games. At least it was until the strange glowing wave overtook the planet. No one really knew how it happened, though considering it returned magic to the world, perhaps the question answered itself. And while around 60-70% of the population remained human, many others were transformed into elves, orcs, or even dragonborn.
There seemed to be no guarantee that the creature you transformed into would be anything like your original body -- Casey had not only been turned into an elf, but also into a woman. He just wanted to continue working as a lawyer on civil rights cases -- many of which were new or a lot more complicated now due to the transformations.
Though he certainly faced his own challenges as well. As he rode on the train to work, a human man approached him.
“So what exactly are you?” The man asked.
“Haven’t you ever seen a wood elf before?” Casey asked.
“I thought y’all wore like skimpy loincloths and danced in the woods all the time.”
“That’s a stereotype. I live in an apartment in Jersey City. I work in Manhattan as a lawyer.”
“Big fancy lawyer, eh?”
It was taking all of Casey’s efforts not to cast a fire bolt on this guy.
